And the transformation is complete. I think I drew the characters a little happier than I had intended. Ah well.
I’ve been looking at art from Don Bluth’s seminal film The Secret of NIMH recently. It’s a great film and was one of my favorites as a kid. It has character designs are simple but expressive. It’s also rather striking how similar Mrs. Brisby’s facial construction is to that of Mickey Mouse. It’s probably not so surprising given that the crew who worked on it was composed of ex-Disney animators. There are a lot of cartoon characters, though, that are based on that based on that basic Mickey Mouse design. They just change the ears and the fur to add some variety.
Heh, since I read the book “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH” as a kid I had no time for the movie at all. Magic?! And Nicodemus was old!?? Pah! Rubbish!
😀
So, is Daedalus going to have any qualms about his… cannibalistic resurrection? Or is he a ‘dog eat dog, devil take the hindmost’ sort of guy?
Well, I saw the movie before I read the book, and I did like the book more. And yes, the magic does make it weaker with deus ex machina. But it’s still a really great movie.
For more on Daedalus, stay tuned.
Daedalus comes as a surprise to me! Now I’m wondering… Will he turn out to be the truly evil one that April only thinks Bartholomew is?
So; was there only one ‘Mrs. Brisby vs NIMH’ movie or was there a sequel? I’ve heard reference to two titles. AndyW’s comment above is the first time I’ve heard of “Mrs. (Frisby?)Brisby and the Rats of NIMH as being a book. (…that I recall. ;-))
Yeah, in the original book her name was Frisby. The first animated was by Don Bluth and released in 1982. There was a sequel in 1998 that was wasn’t nearly as good. Not sure if it played in the theatres or was just direct-to-video. I’d recommend watching the Nostalgia Critic’s review of it rather than renting it.
Thanks! The only thing I ever actually saw was “Mrs. Brisby and the Secret of NIMH” (I think). And that was on tv, once.
Ooooh, the second reptilian to appear in the comic! 😀
